A FATHER'S attempt to discipline his son went horribly wrong when the boy died.
Now the father has been charged with murder.
The 43-year-old father from Saselani, near Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, handed himself over to the police on Sunday evening, just hours after he beat his 20-year-old son to death.
African Eye News Service reported that Lieutenant Ndlovukazi Mashele said the boy was allegedly cornered by his dad, who beat him to a pulp with an iron bar for allegedly stealing R200 from his mum.
"The boy's body was recovered the following morning. He was lying dead inside the garage, with bruises and multiple wounds on his upper and lower body.
"The suspect later handed himself over to police. He appeared in the Bushbuckridge Magistrates Court on a murder charge yesterday," said Mashele.
The matter has been postponed to 28 July for further investigations. The father has been released on R1 000 bail.
The accused, Colonel Corporal Morris Sondlane, 43, was not asked to plead to a charge of murder when he appeared in the Bushbuckridge Magistrates Court on Monday.
He was initially scheduled to appear in the Thulamahashe Magistrate's Court, but the case was shifted to another court after the community members of Saselani village near the town of Bushbuckridge threatened to avenge his 20-year-old son's death.
"The soldier handed himself to the police after assaulting and killing his 20-year-old son, who was a grade 11 learner at a school in Bushbuckridge. The motive of the murder is not clear for now, but it is alleged that the son stole R200 from his mother.
"The case had to be transferred to the Bushbuckridge Magistrates Court for his own safety because the Saselani community members were fuming. He has now been granted R 1 000 bail and the case was postponed to July 28 for further investigation," said Bushbuckridge police spokesperson Captain Ndlovukazi Mashele on Monday.
