SCORES of people turned up to pay their final respects to veteran actor Nyembezi Kunene at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Sebokeng, in the Vaal, yesterday.
Known for his role as Macingwane in the SABC1 drama series Emzini Wezinsizwa and Malume Jabulani in Generations, Nyembezi passed away last week after a long battle with diabetes.
Daily Sun reported that high-profile people who came to pay their last respects included Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete, SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng, Joe "Sdumo" Mafela, Umlilo actor Hamilton Dlamini, Skwizas actor Jerry Phele, Igazi actor Allen Booi, Ring of Lies actress Baby Cele and Skwizas actress Slindile Nodangala.
Joe, who plays Uncle Tebogo in Generations: The Legacy, said it was sad Nyembezi would only be honoured after he is gone.
"I'm not a talkative person. But I really think honouring someone when he's no more is not a good thing.
"I feel Nyembezi should have been celebrated while he was still alive. To his family, allow me to say: nilale ngenxeba," he said.
Scandal! actor Sipho Manzini, who plays Motsepe, said it was a sad day for the entertainment industry.
"He was one of a few legends who was inspired by uplifting young and upcoming actors. He would tell you no production is too small if you're an actor.
"He taught me to appreciate every production company – big or small. That's why I still go for auditions even today. We've lost a good man and a friend who had no issues with anyone," said Motsepe.
Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor, Mahole Mofokeng, said the Eldorado Park Arts and Culture Centre was to be named after Nyembezi. Nyembezi was laid to rest at Vanderbijlpark Cemetery.
