Cape Town - Social networking sites were abuzz with news of an earthquake near Port Elizabeth and Cape Town on Tuesday morning.
News started going around on radio stations and spread to social networking sites such as Twitter.
One tweeter, 'GlamGlitterz' wrote: "Pretty scary stuff… rumour has it there is an earthquake about to hit SA, 2 123km's from PE nearing the Cape…(sic) Not good!" But fears were quickly quelled when geologists revealed that the quake, measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, was 2 130km off the coast of southern Africa and 10km deep.
Craig Smith of the South African Geological Society said that although there only about 10 or 20 earthquakes around the Indian Ocean per year, given the depth and distance of this one, South Africans have nothing to worry about.
