South Africa - A man has escaped from the Mdantsane Correctional Centre outside East London after being assisted by a guard, said officials on Monday.
Luzuko Tabata, 27, escaped on Saturday after being escorted outside the prison by a guard around 13:30, said Correctional Services spokesperson Zamuxolo Femi.
The guard returned around 16:45 and when confronted, denied he had escorted Tabata outside the building. After being shown video footage doing so, the guard confirmed Tabata was not brought back.
The guard was suspended and a case of aiding an escape was opened by police.
Tabata, from Queenstown, was serving a 34-year sentence for rape.
Femi said if the public had any information on Tabata's whereabouts, they should contact their nearest police station.
