Johannesburg Central Methodist Church should stop housing refugees
26 Jan 2011 at 00:02hrs | Views
About 1200 destitute people, mostly Zimbabweans, still live in the Central Methodist Church in inner city Johannesburg South Africa.
At some stage there were about 3000 people living there, using only two inside toilets.
According to the church's Reverend Paul Verryn, new refugees continue to arrive from Zimbabwe, many of whom have been tortured.
DA's Jack Bloom, who visited the church recently, says most of the Zimbabweans are registered as asylum seekers and did not apply for residence or work permits.
The conditions at that church are not the government's problem as the building is not a shelter built for people to live there. The good reverend should stop taking in refugees or build a proper shelter elsewhere if he wants to help them.
