The four robbers who fatally assaulted the late Dr Chrstopher Mushonga before robbing him have each been sentenced to prison terms ranging between 24 and 72 years.

Harare Regional Magistrate, Mr William Bhilar sentenced Steven Zimowa, Asani Chikwanda and Chrispen Sibanda to 72 years in prison each.

He however suspended 36 years on condition of good behaviour.

The three were facing six counts of armed robbery.

The fourth convict, Makaika Milanzi, who was charged with one count of armed robbery, was sentenced to 24 years behind bars.

Milanzi collapsed as Mr Bhilar was passing the sentence leading to a short adjournment.

ZBC News understands that Milanzi, who is alleged to have earlier sought services of a self styled prophet based at Chikurubi Maximum Prison, was assured that he was going to be acquitted.

However the magistrate decided otherwise.

While passing judgement, Mr Bhilar said robbery is a traumatic experience, adding that the level of brutality used by these robbers was shocking, hence they deserve a lengthy custodial sentence.

Meanwhile, the four are on trial at the High Court facing charges of murdering Dr Mushonga.
