Government urged to fast track fertiliser distribution

Government has been urged to urgently distribute top dressing fertilisers under command agriculture to farmers who have an early crop as some of the maize fields are now passing the top dressing stage.

Cihosa Farm in Chipinge has seen the number of hectares under command agriculture being increased from last year's 70 to between 120 to 150 hectares this year with the crop looking good.

The anticipated bumper harvest however might not be realised if about 90 hectares of maize requiring top dressing fails to get the much needed fertiliser, said farm owner Joseph Chinotimba who revealed that any delays to access it by a week will mean huge losses due to low yields.

He said failure to provide top dressing will result in crop yield at his farm being reduced by hundreds of tonnes of grain.

Command agriculture has greatly boosted maize yields in Chipinge with Chihosa Farm targeting over a thousand tonnes this year after having producing over 600 tonnes last season.
