Several schools in and around Bulawayo are deserted as pupils headed earlier calls Wednesday not to report for lessons in preparation for President Robert Mugabe's birthday.

Primary and Secondary Education minister Lazarus Dokora had issued a directive to all Matabeleland schools to shut down for two days.

The schools are earmarked to accommodate thousands of Mugabe's close friends attending the bash at the Rhodes Estate Preparatory School (REPS) , about 30 kilometers out of Bulawayo on Saturday, officials said.

Some delegates are already in the city.

Schools dispatched letters to parents and guardians not to send their kids to school today and Friday.

However, the education ministry on Wednesday evening reversed the directive.

Few pupils could have heard the announcement, hence low turn out.

Some parents condemned Dokora saying he is sabotaging education in Matabeleland.

They wondered whether in provinces where Mugabe holds his lavish birthday celebrations schools close for two days.
