The University of Zimbabwe has evicted 486 male students from halls of residence after the degree aspirants staged solidarity protests for five of their colleagues who had been suspended for sub-letting rooms and taking alcohol on campus. The students are, however, free to attend lectures while their expulsion will be reviewed later this year.

UZ Dean of Students Mr Munyaradzi Madambi said authorities at the higher learning institution took the decision last December.

He said the university prohibits beer drinking and sub-letting of rooms.

According to information gathered last week, security officers caught five students taking alcohol on December 9.  The students were, subsequently, suspended.

One of them returned to the halls of residence a week later to collect his belongings. In an apparent show of solidarity, scores of his colleagues teamed up and marched to the university warden's house where they threatened to assault his wife.

The warden was away at the time.

It is understood the students also stoned a vehicle.  University authorities investigated the matter after which they resolved to evict the culprits.

"This (the evictions) was an administration decision to protect those who were not involved in the protests. However, we are not saying the concerned students are barred for life, but for a semester to allow them time to do self-introspection."
