Mujuru launches girl child scholarship

Vice President Joice Mujuru has launched the Girl Child Scholarship Initiative Fund at Africa University.
The initiative aims to empower young women through access to higher education.
Mujuru, who was accompanied by several ministers, said government has since independence, under the leadership of President Robert Mugabe introduced various education policies that have enabled the country to have one of the highest literacy rates in Africa.
She said there is need for institutions of higher learning, individuals and corporates to come together and remove all the barriers that have hindered the girl child over the years.
Vice President Mujuru commended Africa University for taking up the initiative to empower the girl child saying it tallies with the thrust of the new constitution which is designed to create gender equality.
Speaking at the same occasion, Africa University Vice Chancellor, Professor Fanuel Tagwira commended President Mugabe for his visionary leadership and foresight, especially in the education sector.
The scholarship fund is expected to raise financial resources to assist orphans and vulnerable girl children in meeting their fees.
