University of Zimbabwe Medical School Professor Godfrey Muguti has been appointed Affiliate Clinical Professor at Stanford University in the United States.

This means that the UZ's department of surgery would be affiliated to Stanford University's School of Medicine, a development that will result in an exchange of students between the two institutions.

UZ information director Mr Dennis Rwafa said this milestone development would see students from Stanford University being trained at the UZ while students from UZ would also be trained at Stanford University in surgical education skills.

"This is a very important appointment and will enhance the UZ's standing.

"Through Professor Muguti, the UZ has been affiliated to Stanford University, a prestigious institution," he said.

He said the appointment came as a surprise, but would benefit the surgical department.

"We can learn and benefit a lot from Stanford University. This is a formal relationship created between the two institutions and we can work together in the surgical field as well as research," Prof Muguti said.

He said the affiliation process took about one year for the Accreditation Council in the US to approve the Residency Surgical programme.

"It is a very important relationship particularly because Stanford is a world-class university and ranked among the top five universities.

"We are happy because this will allow our post-graduate students to be able to go to Stanford and interact with colleagues," he said.
