LUPANE State University (LSU) has introduced a Department of Educational Foundations and three degree programmes in the Faculty of Commerce. The Department of Educational Foundations which commenced in April offers a Bachelors Degree (Honours) in Agriculture and a post graduate diploma in Education.
The Faculty of Commerce's newly introduced degree programmes include Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) in Economics, Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) in Entrepreneurship and Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) in Purchasing and Supply Management.
In an interview recently LSU information and public relations officer, Mr Zwelithini Dhlamini said the three commercial degree programmes enrollment was in progress and students would begin their studies in August.
"We conducted a market research on the society we serve and then crafted the programmes to suit their interests. A number of degree programmes will soon be introduced as some are in the process of being accredited in Harare," said Mr Dhlamini.
He said the university was growing and the population of the students was representative of Matabeleland region. However, Mr Dhlamini bemoaned the fact that there was a low uptake of the science programmes offered by the university.
"We have a low market for the science programmes offered by the university because of a low number of schools in Matabeleland North province offering sciences at Advanced Level affecting the intake," said Mr Dhlamini.
LSU was established by an Act of Parliament in 2004 and is the only university in Matabeleland North.
