The Governor and Resident Minister for Matebeleland South province, Angeline Masuku, has officially launched the Gwanda State University which is set to open its doors in September.

The university will begin offering classes in mining engineering and life sciences.

Masuku said the two faculties in the university are very important in the development of the province whose competitive advantage lies in cattle ranching and mining.

She called on the corporate world to complement government efforts in supporting the university that still requires its own building.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Dr Washington Mbizvo, revealed that the university will initially operate as a university college of National University of Science and Technology (NUST) as it awaits for the enactment of its charter.

The university has received $100 000 from the government and will be getting another $100 000 to begin construction at the 87 acre university site and a bus to ferry students to NUST in Bulawayo.

Meanwhile, processing of applications is at an advance stage with between 100 and 120 students expected in the first intake.
