GWANDA High School headmaster Arthur Maphosa revealed that 10 girls had dropped out of school this year after falling pregnant.

Speaking at the school's speech and prize giving day ceremony on Friday, Maphosa said pregnancies were one of the major reasons enrolment was decreasing at the school in addition to financial constraints, truancy and illness.

"Among the 10 that dropped out due to pregnancy were three Form 3s, four Form 4s and three 'A' Level students," Maphosa said.

Gwanda High is the largest school in Matabeleland South Province in terms of enrollment.

Prince Dube, director of Medsup and Laboratory Supplies, who was guest speaker at the event, challenged the police to investigate cases of pregnancy at the school and bring to justice those responsible.

"I would want to believe some of these girls are below the age of 16 and the police should bring to book those responsible for impregnating them," Dube said.

"To the outgoing students, the world out there is full of deception. Take care. The HIV and Aids scourge is a reality and there is no reason for carelessness. Graveyards are full today because of young people that have been consumed at a tender age," Dube warned.

Gwanda High School performed dismally in last year's "O" Levels recording a 21% pass rate.
