Mugabe caps 1 250 CUT graduands

President Robert Mugabe, who is also the Chancellor of the Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) has capped some 1 250 graduands at the institution today (Friday).

Addressing guests and graduands at the ceremony, CUT Vice Chancellor Professor David Jambwa Simbi said the student population at the institution has increased from a mere 458 at inception to the current 5 582.

Professor Simbi said the university is in the process of establishing the Department of Wildlife and Safari Management under the School of Hospitality and Tourism to form a new school of wild and nature conservation.

The establishment of the separate school will encompass wildlife reproductive health and aquatic life issues to enable the institution to contribute meaningfully to wildlife conservation and preservation in the country.

He revealed that the university's Department of Wildlife and Safari Management responded positively to the recent incident of elephant cyanide poisoning at Hwange National Park by dispatching a team of its top scientists to assist parks and wildlife in investigating the problem.

A new post graduate programme in business intelligence at masters' degree level is being finalised to address pertinent issues relating to setting up business enterprises growth patterns and impact on employment generation and sustaining livelihoods.

The university has established a research entitled - Invasive Species Research Management Unit - to tackle the water hyacinth which is threatening to suffocate Zimbabwe's rivers and lakes in the next 10 to 20 years.

Professor Simbi implored government to invest in the area of research for the development of its manpower that will play a huge role in the exploitation of the country's resources in the era of empowerment and indigenisation.

CUT boasts of 50 PHD holders among its teaching staff compared to just two at its inception.

The 9th graduation ceremony coincides with the university's 10th anniversary of existence.
