The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has launched an education strategy on life-skills, sexuality and HIV and AIDS in an effort to increase young people's access to correct information.

The 2012 - 2015 strategic plan was launched in Harare over the weekend after the realisation that the school is the most important place to impart life-skills, sexual and reproductive health lessons as well as information on HIV and AIDS.

The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Constance Chigwamba said the ministry is committed to positive sexual and reproductive health outcomes for young people, most of whom spend the greater part of their time in schools and other educational settings.

A representative from the Ministry of Health and Child Care said although the country had recorded a decline in HIV prevalence to the current 14,5 percent, a lot still needs to be done to curb new infections by increasing access to HIV care and treatment for children living with the virus.

The strategic plan will ensure that young people receive critical information and health services that will help reduce new infections and result in children leading healthier lives.

The plan was developed after extensive consultations with various stakeholders from government ministries, parastatals, civil society, young people, teachers, parents and community leaders, and was funded by various organisation that include the National AIDS Council, UNICEF, UNFPA and UNESCO.
