The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) says the government should prioritise the improvement of conditions of services for teachers to maintain high standards of education.

The PTUZ, whose third annual congress ended in Harare on Monday, said if teachers' working conditions are not improved, the education standards might be compromised.

In an interview, PTUZ President, Takavafira Zhou said there is need for the government to work towards restoring the honour of teachers through improving their conditions of service as well as reviewing their salaries.

The union's Secretary General, Raymond Majongwe however bemoaned the divisions between the civil servants' representative bodies, saying they have stifled salary negotiations.

"We call on the government to consider accommodating the other new unions to be represented in the salary negotiations," he said.

The PTUZ has an affiliation of 11 000 members, making it the second biggest teacher organisation in the country after the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta).
