Government has called on the Zimbabwe Council of Higher Education (ZIMCHE) to deal decisively with institutions offering bogus degree programmes.

ZIMCHE says this will ensure that tertiary institutions offer relevant, suitable and appropriate degrees to maintain the high standards of education which the country is famed for.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education Doctor, Washington Mbizvotold told reporters that institutions and programmes that do not meet the set standards are to be closed down or suspended.

ZIMCHE Accreditation and Quality Assurance Committee Chairman, Professor Levy Nyagura who was recently in Kenya and Tanzania said his team has learnt other ways of improving the quality of education in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe has had some universities suspended for offering some degree programmes after being deemed to be sub-standards.

ZIMCHE was established by an act of parliament to coordinate education provision by institutions of higher learning in the country.
