Zimbabwe education ministry makes Mathematics and Science compulsory subjects

The Zimbabwe parliament was told that the teaching of mathematics and science subjects is now compulsory up to Ordinary Level.
Education, Sport, Arts and Culture Secretary Dr Stephen Mahere told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, Science and Technology that the requirement was necessitated by the need to develop Zimbabwe.
Dr Mahere said after realising the importance of Science and Technological Education in national development, the ministry has made the teaching of science and mathematics compulsory throughout the education system up to Ordinary Level.
In addition to Mathematics and Science students will also have to take English Language, Shona or Ndebele and History as compulsoty subjects.
He also said Government had engaged the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education to make it mandatory for all applicants who intend to train as primary school teachers to have passed O-Level Mathematics.
