Lupane State University (LSU) in Matabeleland North has started a search for a vice- chancellor to replace the late Mclean Mackson Bhala who passed away in August.

According to an advertisement in the media by the chairperson of the University's council, Sam Malaba, the institution is looking for a vice-chancellor who would also be the university's chief executive officer in terms of the Universities Act, and will report to the council.

The candidate is required to assume responsibilities, among them initiating, recommending and monitoring institutional policies, systems and procedures dealing with all academic, research and development, including  administrative issues of the university.

The LSU is one of the many state universities initiated by the government after independence. The institution, which is 200 kilometres along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road and is still under construction, conducts its lectures in Bulawayo. It has, however,  held its graduations on its site and these have been presided over by its chancellor, President Robert Mugabe.

Bhala, who was 60 at the time of his death, was a founding-committee member of the institution and was elevated to being the director of LSU in preparation of the university's first enrollment in 2005. He saw the university grow from an initial enrolment of 12 students in the Faculty of Agriculture to its status at the time of his death when it had 3 500 students. He had then been promoted to acting vice-chancellor of the university.

He died at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo after he had been admitted for a check-up and was buried in his rural home of Plumtree in Matabeleland South.
