UNITED Kingdom based radio station, Visions FM Radio Limited (VFM),
donated sporting equipment, medals and a cup to Thekwane High School in
Bulilima District at the school's inter-house competitions.
The founder of the online radio station (www.visionfm.com), Stephen Muzite told Chronicle that the donation was part of the station's project of developing sports at grassroots level.
Muzite who was in the company of workmates gave the school two sets of football uniforms for the boys and girls' teams on Friday.
They also donated an athletics kit, 360 medals and a cup that was handed over to the school's winning house, Hlabangana House.
"We've been involved in developing schools' sports for the past two years. At the moment we're still working with one school which is Thekwane High School.
"Last year we donated sports kits, laptops, balls and literature to the school. This time around we introduced the VFM Live Athletics Cup. This will be a yearly event where the cup will be awarded to the winning house," said Muzite.
He said this year's donation was worth $2,000. It comprised 70 athletics and football uniforms with the school's logo. Gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to best performing athletes for each event at the inter-house competitions.
Muzite said they were making efforts to extend the project to other schools.
He said lack of equipment was crippling sporting in schools.
"There's a huge gap in terms of sporting infrastructure, training facilities and training equipment for schools in rural areas. As a result pupils lack appropriate motivation and the zeal to pursue sports further," said Muzite.
He said there was a need for sport to be taken seriously at schools and this would be possible with appropriate resources.
He said pupils have to be given an opportunity to explore their sporting capabilities to the fullest.
Muzite said the radio station would also identify pupils with a potential in sport and help them with proper training.
VFM is a UK based online radio station which broadcasts in 92 countries and is run by a group of Zimbabweans.
He said in the future, the radio station would hold development projects outside the sporting arena.
A presenter with the station who is also a former ZBCtv presenter John "Mzala" Phiri said proper training of school pupils was key in developing a vibrant sporting industry.
"When we presented the pupils with medals and other prizes they appeared excited which shows that rewarding them is an effective motivation tool," he said.
