The construction of the Gwanda Adventist primary school has been hailed as a positive development that will improve the quality of education in the town by easing the teacher-pupil ratio at the other schools.
Matabeleland South Provincial Education Director, Mrs Tumisang Tabela hailed the construction of the new school at Spitzkop North Extension, saying will help decongest Senondo and Jahunda primary schools.
The new school is also expected to reduce the distances that some pupils walk to the nearest school.
The project that was mooted in 2002 by the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church but had stalled due to lack of funds, finally kicked off after the church received financial assistance from Maranatha Volunteers International.
The church has so far built 15 schools in the province and has also pledged to continue investing in education as part of its missionary activities.
There are four more stands available for the construction of two primary schools and two secondary schools according to the Gwanda Town Council and infrastructural development has been cited as key if the town is to be accorded city status.
Schools in Gwanda are accommodating an average of 45 pupils per class, making the teacher-pupil ratio one of the highest in the country.
