The University of Zimbabwe shuts down as staff and students run amok.

Hundreds of frustrated UZ students had embarked on peaceful demonstrations demanding the kitchen staff to end their strike. Students who have long had their own grievances regarding poor food rations, which they said could not match the tuition fees.

Students were demonstrating against the institution's authorities claiming to have gone for two days without food.

The university lecturers and other workers are on strike including the catering staff who also joined the strike leaving the students starving.

The kitchen staff joined the lecturers who went on strike since the university opened two weeks ago and there have not been any classes.

Riot police are manning the university premise at all the entrances as they monitored the situation which is largely peaceful.

Meanwhile, the UZ has closed academic lessons for one week to Tuesday next week, the 24th of March.

In a statement, UZ registrar Sergeant Chevo said students have since been ordered to vacate the university campus as the officials are addressing issues that require immediate attention.

UNIVERSITY ON RECESS
The University of Zimbabwe is on recess from 17 March, 2015 to Tuesday 24 March, 2015 in order to address issues that require immediate attention.

All students are expected to vacate the halls of residence and the University campus with immediate effect and by not later than 3.00pm today, 17 March, 2015. Lectures wilt resume on Wednesday 25 March, 2015.
