Japan award Bulawayo academics scholarships

THREE Bulawayo academics have been selected for three of Japanese Government Scholarship for 2015 to undergo studies in various programmes.

The three are Simon Mduduzi Juba a former A-Level Student from Mpopoma High School,  Andile Maqhuzu, a Teaching Assistant at NUST and  Enock Mpofu, a Lecturer from Harare Institute of Technology did his undergraduate studies at NUST.

The embassy said the scholarships require applicants with a high mathematical and science dexterity as applicants will sit for Maths and any two science subjects related to their undergraduate studies as qualifying examinations.

In the past, Zimbabweans have been trained in such disciplines as Chemistry, Engineering, Medicine, Metallurgy, Environmental Sciences, Politics, Agriculture, Finance, Policy Studies and Automation and Control.

 The embassy in  collaboration of the Bulawayo City Council and National University of Science and Technology, held scholarship promotions at the Small City Hall and NUST campus in 2014.

It was also the first time that Zimbabwe got a seat for Undergraduate.

"The Japanese Embassy in Zimbabwe is pleased to announce that three of the four beneficiaries of the Japanese Government Scholarship for 2015 came from Bulawayo.

"The Japanese Government Scholarship promotes human resource development by training undergraduates and research students at Masters and PhD levels.

"With the kind collaboration of the Bulawayo City Council and National University of Science and Technology, scholarship promotions were held at the Small City Hall and NUST campus in 2014. It was also the first time that Zimbabwe got a seat for Undergraduate" the embassy said in statement.

The Japanese Government Scholarship is open to Zimbabweans who have completed and passed their A-Levels and are below 23 years for Undergraduate studies and 35years for Research Students for Masters or Phd levels.

Below is the brief background of the successful candidates;

Simon Mduduzi Juba a former A-Level Student from Mpopoma High School is the only Zimbabwean, and one of the three in Africa who passed the qualifying entrance examinations.

 Simon will join Tokyo University from 2015-2020 where he will spend the first year studying Japanese Language followed by a technical course in Electronics and Electrical Engineering. He has a chance to extend his studies to Masters and PhD.

Andile Maqhuzu, a Teaching Assistant at NUST will be studying for a Masters in Environmental Science and Technology in the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Technology at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He will stay in Japan will be from 2015-2017 with a possibility of a PhD extension.

Enock Mpofu, a Lecturer from Harare Institute of Technology did his undergraduate studies at NUST and will be studying Biotechnology at PhD level at the University of Tokyo. He joins the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
