Mzingwane High School is looking at engaging debt collectors to recover money that is owed by parents in school fees arrears.

In an advert in the local newspapers yesterday, Mzingwane High School said it is inviting bids for debt collection services. Applications can be submitted in person are dropped off at the school by the 15th of May 2015.

It is not clear whether Mzingwane High School has started handing over parents who defaulted in paying school fees in the last few terms to debt collectors.

With the economic challenges in Zimbabwe, more and more schools are engaging the services of debt collectors in an attempt to recover school fees arrears.

There has been incidences where some debt collectors engaged by schools are allegedly demanding livestock as payment.

Debt collectors are well known for harassing parents when ever they are collecting their dues.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Lazarus Dokora last year directed schools not to chase children for non-payment of fees. He, however, gave schools the green light to use traditional and civil courts to recover money owed to them by parents and guardians.

In many cases when parents are handed to debt collectors, a $500 court fee and messenger of court costs is added to the bill.

Parents who spoke to Bulawayo24 News said it was unfair to engage debt collectors.
