The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has been hit by a shortage of lecturers for masters programmes in most faculties.
This was revealed during a networking dinner for alumni members of the Faculty of Social Studies held over the weekend in Harare.
Zimbabwe's oldest and most prestigious institute of higher learning is facing challenges in providing masters degree programmes in most faculties owing to shortage of suitably qualified lecturers who must be holders of doctorates according to the requirements of the institution.
During the networking dinner, the Registrar of the Council of Social Workers, Noah Mudenda questioned the authorities of the institution on why it has not been training social workers at masters level since five years ago.
UZ Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Chipo Dyanda admitted that there is a crippling challenge in most faculties at the institution which can only be resolved if qualified personnel come on board.
The human resource challenges are not peculiar to UZ alone as other institutions of higher learning have been affected by brain drain.
