A Chinese university has expressed interest in partnering with the Amai Mugabe School and to assist in strengthening the country's education system. The Renmin University of China delegation led by chairman of the University Council and vice president of All China Women's Federation, Professor Jin Nuo, said this after touring Amai Mugabe School and children's home in Mazowe on Wednesday.
The delegation also donated stationery and other teaching materials to the school.
Prof Nuo said she was impressed by what she saw at the children's home and school.
"I was impressed by the beautiful campus and the project, which is meaningful to the well-being of children," she said. "I am happy to be here and I am impressed with the work being done by First Lady, Amai Grace Mugabe in looking after the children and affording them education.
"We have a similar institution in China and we are interested in forging relations. We have some ideas for bilateral co-operation. I have had discussions with authorities concerning the issue. Zimbabwe and China have a lot of similarities including the two countries' education systems."
Prof Nuo said she was willing to adopt a child at the Amai Mugabe Children's Home and pledged to support the children residing there.
Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister, Saviour Kasukuwere, who received the gift from the delegation on behalf of Amai Grace Mugabe, said he was happy with the visit of the Chinese delegation to the institution and their plans to forge relations.
"They have proposed to go into partnership with the Grace Mugabe Foundation since it has preparatory, primary and secondary schools," he said. "The setting up of a college is also in progress.
"We want to have an exchange programme and keep relations between the two institutions. The First Lady was educated at the university and we welcome and appreciate their gesture."
The Amai Mugabe School was founded by the First Lady through the Grace Mugabe Foundation and was constructed with the assistance of a grant from the Chinese government.
