One thousand four hundred and eighteen graduands have been conferred with degrees in various fields at the Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT).

The ceremony officially got on a roll upon declaration of the congregation as a graduation ceremony by CUT Chancellor President Robert Mugabe.

The graduation ceremony saw a total 197 graduands being conferred with Master of Science degrees in Post Harvest Technology and in Strategic Management as well as Masters Degree in Business Intelligence.

The 1 418 graduands were drawn from the Institute of Lifelong Learning and six schools namely agricultural sciences and technology, engineering sciences and technology, entrepreneurship and business sciences, art and design, wildlife, ecology and conservation and the School of Hospitality and Tourism.

CUT Vice Chancellor Professor David Simbi bemoaned the low numbers in science and engineering programmes and blamed it on the supply side which is not providing adequate Advanced Level graduands with relevant passes.

The university has had to change its admission policy to allow for an intake of engineering students every semester in order to make up for the low numbers, says Professor Simbi.

The university is also carrying out several researches that should provide solutions to some challenges bedeviling the country.

The university will next year launch a scholarship fund aimed at retaining one first class student from each school to undertake graduate research studies up to doctorate level.

The graduation ceremony is the 11th for the university.
