THE government has assured staff at the country's state universities that it was working flat out to ensure they get their outstanding salaries. In a statement yesterday, the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Professor Jonathan Moyo said he empathised with the workers.

"The Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development fully acknowledges and shares the concerns of staff at State Universities over their unpaid salaries which include half of their August salaries and their full salaries for November and December," said Prof Moyo.

He said his ministry has engaged that of Finance and Economic Development to ensure that lasting solutions are made as failure to pay university staff threatens Zim-Asset's success. "Accordingly, the Ministry is liaising with Treasury to have this unacceptable situation redressed as matter of urgency," said Prof Moyo.

The ministry, he said, wished to place on record government's appreciation for the hard work and sacrifices that the staff at the State universities is making to contribute to Zim-Asset by training the country's human capital without which the ongoing socioeconomic transformation would neither be possible or sustainable.

"Furthermore, the ministry wishes to assure staff at State Universities of its commitment to work with Treasury and other relevant authorities to urgently find lasting solutions to ensure that their salaries are paid when due and in an orderly and predictable manner," said Prof Moyo.
