Several schools in the Nyaminyami Area of Kariba need massive upgrades as they are in a bad shape with pupils attending lessons in pole and dagga structures that are not conducive to proper learning.

A greater proportion of the schools in rural Kariba do not have adequate  classroom blocks, forcing the institutions to resort to the use of grass thatched structures.

In some instances, lessons are conducted under trees.

Against this background, the Nyaminyami Rural District Council has come on board to try and address the plight of the community by constructing a number of schools using internally generated resources or in partnership with the private sector.

The local authority has so far constructed Chikuro School and joined hands with Padenga Holdings, the Zambezi River Authority and Kariba Redd to construct classroom blocks at Kalundu, Kanhanga and Majazo primary schools.

Members of the Nyaminyami community in Chief Mola's area expressed concern at the state of schools attended by their children.

Nyaminyami RDC CEO, Ms Tsana Chirau applauded the good working relationship between the local authority and development partners as it has resulted in infrastructure development projects at some schools.

Nyaminyami is one of the least developed areas in the country, with the state of schools in the area being a reflection of the general level of development in the predominantly wildlife corridor.
