Zimbabwe Rural Teachers Association President Gift Siziba has branded the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) drive as an elitist and discriminatory project by Government.
Siziba told Parliament committee on Education Sports and Culture on Thursday that STEM only caters for urban schools which have fully equipped laboratories.
He said STEM is being offered to rich students in boarding while rural schools have no laboratories to benefit from it.
The programme intends to trigger an increase in students who will enrol for STEM degrees at the country's universities from 2018.
Government is paying full school and boarding fees for all students in public schools who register for STEM subjects this year and higher education minister Jonathan Moyo is in spearheading the project.
Siziba appealed to Government to declare a state of emergency in rural schools. He said about $60 million is urgently need to address key issues.
