THE Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) has completed constructing the multi-million dollar Robert Gabriel Mugabe School of Education in Masvingo, which will be open for lectures next month.
The school has been so named in acknowledgment of the iconic status of President Mugabe and his immense contribution to education. Throughout his life, President Mugabe has fought to ensure that every Zimbabwean has access to affordable and quality education.
GZU Director of Information Anderson Chipatiso said the project was bankrolled by a number of philanthropic organisations and individuals.
The school accommodates about 5,000 students and will be officially opened for use by the end of next month.
He said President Mugabe will preside over the official opening on a date yet to be advised.
The university's Department of Works and Estates with the assistance of the Department of Manpower Training and Development carried out the construction works.
"We've completed the lecture theatres, which is the main job at the campus and in four weeks' time we would've done with the administration block, which is now 95 percent complete. The lecture rooms accommodate about 5,000 students and we expect classes to start in August this year," said Chipatiso.
He said the project is the first of its kind across the African continent and is meant to provide a conducive learning environment for students.
"There's no other structure like this one across Africa. The architectural beauty of the structure befits the person of President Mugabe, who is also the Chancellor of all State universities. He is an icon in the area of academia which is what has motivated us to build such a magnificent structure that will not only provide a unique atmosphere to students but will also stand as a centre of attraction even to visitors," he said.
