PRIMARY and Secondary Education Minister Dr Lazarus Dokora has said he is a Catholic, putting to rest speculation on social media that he was Muslim.

Social media was rife with messages claiming Dr Dokora was Muslim and had allegedly banned Scripture Union in schools and his faith was behind the introduction of the national school pledge.

Speaking on the dangers of social media during the launch of the National Schools Feeding Programme at Mpumelelo Primary School in Bulawayo last Friday, Dr Dokora said people must be wary of what they read on social media.

He rejected claims that he was a Muslim who was working to undo Christian activities in schools.

He said there were parents who were also wrongly claiming that the national pledge had replaced the Bible.

"You have your national anthem and the school kids go through their school pledge, you have a very active and persuasive preacher here (Mpumelelo Primary School). I don't know what church it is – Methodist I'm told. Well I go to the Catholic one, but we agree with the Lord's prayer, he got us all to repeat the Lord's. In other words the national schools pledge has not replaced the scriptures or prayer at assembly."

He told parents and pupils to be cautious of what they read on social media as there were people who spend their time peddling falsehoods on the platform.

"In other words, these myths are created in the cyber colonies and then propagated by persons who find a lot of time in their idle space to propagate them," said Dr Dokora.

Recently the minister dismissed claims on social media that he was pushing for teachers to be compelled to wear uniforms.
