Mutare, Zimbabwe - August 2, 2016 - Indications are that recent media reports on the current political and economic situation in Zimbabwe have been a source of deep concern and anxiety. I want to personally apologize for this and assure you that my administration is working diligently to assess and mitigate the impact of the current challenges on Africa University's operations and outlook.

Africa University is open and operating smoothly. Thanks to a recent gift and the wise use of resources, the university was able to refurbish sections of the Bishop Edwin C. and Mrs. Boulton Hall of Residence and complete a major facelift of the Ndorimana Bonaventure/Student Union building. Our faculty and staff members are ready for the start of the 2016/17 academic year. Students have already started arriving for registration and orientation, which begin on August 10th.

As regards the challenges facing Zimbabwe, I want to assure you that the Zimbabwean government, the business community, universities, churches and others in civil society are coming together to map a way forward for the nation.

We recognize that the economic realities are likely to have a negative impact on Africa University's student enrolment and consequently, the operating budget. Nonetheless, the university is confident of its ability to care for its students and staff and deliver high quality and transformative teaching and learning activities. Africa University will continue to be fiscally prudent, accountable, and effective in its operations, even in tough times. That's our track record.

Your investment in Africa University is safe. Moreover, your commitment to Africa University is as profoundly important today as it was when the institution first opened 24 years ago. Thank you for remaining steadfast in the conviction that your ongoing support is a source of hope and transformation for the nations of sub-Saharan Africa.
