The Chegutu Municipality has rolled out a community health care programme targeting the elderly who are finding it difficult to raise money to meet the cost of medical care.

The programme held under the auspices of the Chegutu Mayor's Cheer Fund, saw dozens of elderly people receive free medical treatment and drugs.

Most of those who received treatment said they often face challenges in raising funds to meet medical costs.

Chegutu based medical practitioner, Dr Nemache Mawere and others in the medical field, joined hands with the municipality's health department to offer their services.

Dr Mawere said the majority of the patients presented themselves with ailments associated with old age.

Chegutu Municipality Director of Housing, Health and Community Services, Ms Shylet Dzivai said proceeds of the mayor's cheer fund purchases some of the medicines used during the community healthcare programme.

Meanwhile, the Chegutu Municipality handed over an assortment of groceries and clothes to the elderly, people living with disability, and orphaned and vulnerable children from the town.

The items were handed over to the recipients by the town's mayor, Councillor Leo Gwanzura, who called on the society to always remember the plight of those in difficult circumstances.
