The American Heart Association has accredited the CEARS Training Academy in Harare's Milton Park suburb as one of its training providers, enabling the academy to offer internationally recognised basic life support training and certificates.
An independent certification body conducted an American Heart Association certification audit on May 3, which confirmed that the CEARS Training Academy meets all the training and quality system management requirements of the American Heart Association.
This resulted in its accreditation as an American Heart Association training provider and an affiliate of the Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa.
The academy, which was established by Cimas Emergency Air Rescue Service (CEARS), offers a Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course for healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses and non medical hospital staff, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course that anyone can take advantage of and First Aid courses.
CPR is a lifesaving technique that is useful in many emergencies, including a heart attack or near drowning, in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped. It involves chest compressions often combined with artificial ventilation, such as mouth to mouth resuscitation.
"The academy's objective is to deliver lifesaving skills to the community and local businesses. Its accreditation as an American Heart Association training provider enables it to provide internationally accredited lifesaving courses, as well as high quality First Aid courses to the public, medical professionals, businesses and schools," commented CEARS business development manager Añcha Chimbghandah.
"Its instructors are well qualified and experienced in training both medical and non-medical course participants. They undergo in-process assessments in order to remain up to date with the latest lifesaving developments," she said.
The academy offers four First Aid courses. These are Basic First Aid, Industrial First Aid, First Aid for Family and Friends, and First Aid Essentials for Children.
Group training for all courses is available on site or off site, meaning, for instance, that a company can arrange for a course to be conducted at the workplace.
