Makokoba Member of Parliament and Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe has revealed plans to open a cancer centre named Thoko Cancer Foundation at the end of April.

Speaking during a tour of cancer facilities at Harare's Parirenyatwa Khuphe a cancer survivor with one breast said she decided to open the cancer treatment centre after realising most patients went untreated because due to prohibitive medical costs.

"I was treated in South Africa because there are limited facilities here. Treatment is supposed to be available and affordable. We cannot have people die due to a treatable disease," she said.

Khupe came in the open about her health status in May last year. She went through a surgery to remove one of her breasts in South Africa late last year and has been frequenting the Southern African country further tests.

Oncologist Anna-Marie Nyakabau told Khupe that the hospital needed more radiotherapy machines to meet the increasing number of cancer patients.

She said the one machine they used had become obsolete.

Health and Child Welfare minister Henry Madzorera said the hospital would soon receive three new radiotherapy machines while Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo would get two.
