More than 60 000 people from rich and influential Mines and Mining Development Minister Obert Mpofu's Umguza constituency are living in risk of failing to access anti-retroviral drugs due to budgetary constraints.

The Senate Thematic Committee on HIV and Aids recently revealed that the situation was a result of government's failure to release funds to Nyamandlovu District Hospital located at the heart of Mpofu's constituency.

The committee conducted a tour in a number of hospitals in the five of the country's ten provinces.

"It was sad to note that all health centres visited had similar problems as funds were no longer released for the running of the hospitals," read the report.

"At Nyamandlovu District Hospital 60 000 patients on anti-retroviral treatment are at risk of failing to access their drugs if the matter is not urgently addressed."

Meanwhile, the committee revealed that Mpilo Central Hospital is mired in a debt of $1,6 million to drug suppliers.

It was said that Mpilo had only been given $2,6 of the $4 million allocated to the health institution last year.
