Acting President Joice Mujuru says the country has made strides towards reducing malaria related illnesses and deaths.

Mujuru said this in a speech read on her behalf by Mashonaland Central Governor and Resident Minister, Advocate Martin Dinha during national commemorations to mark SADC Malaria Day in Dotito, Mt Darwin.

She revealed that the country has managed to reduce the number of people suffering from malaria from 136 per thousand in 2000, to 25 people per thousand by end of last year.

Mujuru added that malaria remains the major health problem with impediments to social economic development.

She however, urged the country's media to report health issues accurately and verify technical issues with relevant authorities before publishing.

The commemorations were held under the theme: "Be Free of Malaria in the SADC Region".
