The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe has shown great concern over the continued use of dangerous cosmetics like skin lighteners and imported female beauty products that were banned under Zimbabwean law.
Ambi, carolite, dipresona, and epiderm crème were cited as some of the most dangerous cosmetics that have been banned but are still popular on the illegal market.
Senior Regulatory Officer in the licensing and enforcement department of the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe, Caroline Samatanga, said one has to be responsible for their own skin, adding that registered pharmacies are reliable sources of cosmetics compared to the illegal market.
"These products are very harmful to health as they contain active ingredients that are harmful to the skin. No one has tested them for safety," said Samatanga.
Beauty products on the illegal market are popular among Zimbabweans as they are cheap and unscrupulous dealers are taking advantage of their high demand by selling these unsafe products in their shops and flea markets.
