The UNAIDS Country Director, Ms Tatiana Shomilina has commended government for its comprehensive commitment to halt and reverse the HIV pandemic as well as mitigating its impact.

During the 65th Session of the Convention of Heads of State and Governments Representatives in 2011, the United Nations came up with 10 political declarations on HIV and AIDS, with the aim of intensifying efforts to eliminate the pandemic.

Among the 10 declarations, only eight were applicable to Zimbabwe.

Speaking to ZBC News in Harare recently, Ms Shomilina said Zimbabwe has done much in fulfilling its obligation in the fight against the disease.

"What is only needed is the full involvement of traditional leaders in community mobilisation and the support of community based groups in order to intensify the national response to the pandemic," said Ms Shomilina.

In its National HIV and AIDS Strategic Plan, Zimbabwe has committed itself to working towards zero new infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS related deaths.

Some of the UN targets and elimination commitments which Zimbabwe should achieve by 2015 include: reducing sexual transmission, elimination of new HIV infections in children, avoiding TB deaths, eliminating stigma and discrimination, among others.
