A SISTER-IN-CHARGE at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH)'s Forester Ward appeared at the Bulawayo Magistrates' Court last week facing charges of selling expired Amphotericin B drugs to a patient.

Patricia Malemane Dube (59) of New Magwegwe in Bulawayo appeared before magistrate Gladmore Mushove facing two charges - one of illegally selling drugs and another of selling expired drugs at UBH on March 3. For the State, Raymond Makaza said a male patient, Lovemore Tsingano, was prescribed the Amphotericin B drugs.

Tsingano's wife Singatsho Sikhundla took the prescription to Dube, who allegedly told her that she could supply the drugs at a cost of $20 per 50 milligrammes (mg) vial.

Sikhundla gave Dube two $20 notes and received 2x50mg vial drugs.

The matter was reported to UBH public relations officer Nobuhle Thebe and subsequently referred to the police, leading to the recovery of the 2x50mg vial drugs which Dube had sold to Sikhundla.

The State said when the drugs were scrutinised, it was discovered that they had expired.

In her warned and cautioned statement recorded on Wednesday, Dube admitted to selling the drugs to Tsingano, but said she knew they had a life span of three months after the expiry date.
