CRS drills borehole at Mpilo to support nutritional gardening

CHRISTIAN Relief Services (CRS) has drilled a borehole at Mpilo Central Hospital's Opportunistic Infection clinic to support a nutritional garden targeted to serve patients with a variety of vegetables.
The project is also aimed at empowering patients with gardening skills to enable them to establish their own gardens when they are discharged from hospital.
CRS has been implementing a nutrition support scheme to support the TB and HIV treatment project since 2007 in conjunction with Mpilo Central Hospital and the Health and Child Care ministry.
CRS country representative Pulickal José speaking at the unveiling of the borehole said: "The intervention is aimed at providing nutritious vegetables for consumption and will commence when the beneficiary is enrolled for nutrition rehabilitation and is expected to improve the long term food requirements for the targeted households. The borehole will also address water challenges at the clinic."
José said there would a be demonstration that would be used to educate beneficiaries visiting the clinic on low input gardens.
"Beneficiaries without access to the garden will be encouraged to start keyhole gardens at their homes using skills imparted at the clinic," he said.
