Zim doctors call off strike

The Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) membership has unanimously resolved to end the strike and to resume their duties with immediate effect.
The paralysing strike by doctors had entered a third week until the ZHDA membership unanimously agreed to go back to work after noting some progress in negotiations with the Health Service Board and the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
The decision to call off the strike was arrived at today when more than 150 doctors from Harare and Chitungwiza met at Parirenyatwa Hospital and agreed to resume their duties while they wait for the implementation of the agreed package.
About 400 doctors went on strike on the 27th of last month demanding a salary review from the current US$283 to US$1200 per month, in addition to a review of their housing, transport and risk allowances.
Middle level and some senior doctors later joined the strike in solidarity with their junior counterparts.
The industrial action dragged on for almost three weeks with the doctors maintaining that they would not go back to work without a written commitment from the government.
Due to the strike, many patients in towns were now flocking to district and provincial hospitals to access treatment, which led to the district and provincial doctors also joining the strike this week.
