Gwanda Provincial Hospital has acquired equipment and has beefed up its medical staff in what authorities at the institution say is part of government's efforts to boost the health delivery system.
The hospital that has been operating with two doctors for the past seven years now boasts of a compliment of twelve doctors.
According to the hospital's medical superintendent, Dr Pugie Chimberengwa, state of the art equipment that include digital x-ray and sterilising equipment have been acquired while the laundry department is now fully functional.
The hospital was commended for being the leading health institution in the provision of total quality management care.
The government will continue to work towards improving access to quality health care service, said the Minister of Rural Development and Preservation of National Heritage, Abednico Ncube, who handed over wheelchairs.
The fifteen wheelchairs that were donated by World Vision will see hospital receiving 10, while the remaining five will benefit Manama Hospital in Gwanda South.
Meanwhile, Gwanda residents have given the local authority and Zinwa an ultimatum to address the water crisis in the town, saying they are now being exposed to water-bourne diseases.
The water crisis in Gwanda has spanned over a month as Zinwa rations supplies to force the local authority to pay up about US$8 million the parastatal is owed.
Angry Gwanda residents who have been experiencing acute water shortages following a decision by Zinwa to ration supplies have served notice of demonstrating next week.
The residents who have been calling on Zinwa to handover water treatment and reticulation to council say dual ownership of water provision is impacting negatively on efficient service delivery in the town.
Gwanda Residents Association representative Bekezela Fuzwayo claims the defaulters are not ordinary people but companies and government departments.
Town councils in Matabeleland South province were recently given the authority to introduce the programme by the government, but Gwanda residents are suspicious of the new development.
