Chiredzi district has dislodged Masvingo on highest number of sexually transmitted cases recorded in the past three months.

Latest statistics from the National AIDS Council (NAC) show that Chiredzi is now leading.

By the 3rd quarter of this year, the district had recorded 6 311 cases of STIs.

Health authorities are cracking their heads to reverse worrying increase of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the district.

NAC coordinator for Masvingo province Evos Makoni says the poor performance of companies in Masvingo has seen the migration of commercial sex workers to Chiredzi which has a more vibrant economy than the rest of the province due to the sugar cane plantations.

"We have realised that Chiredzi used to come second to Masvingo rural. But this year it has been shooting higher and it has the highest figures.

"What we have also analysed is that the economic trend we have in Chiredzi means they have more disposable income," said Makoni.

The new infections are high in Chiredzi town with fewer cases being recorded in rural Chiredzi.

Chiredzi hospital has the highest number of new infections followed by Tshovani Poly Clinic, Hippo Valley Medical Centre and Collin Saunders Hospital.

Zaka district has the least number of cases having recorded 3 564 cases by the third quarter this year.
