An unknown mother of two reportedly dumped her two children at Mpilo Central Hospital in February this year.
The woman abandoned her son aged three and his sister who is nine months old.
According to hospital staff the woman was referred to Mpilo from Inyathi District Hospital in Bubi.
"It seems she had it planned. She brought her children on January 20, from Inyathi. Officials at Inyathi District Hospital said she requested to be referred to Mpilo. Her younger one wasn't feeling well but the boy was okay. She pleaded with hospital officials to let her stay with both of them while the other one was receiving medical treatment. She told hospital officials that she had no one at home to take care of him," Mpilo public relations officer Sibusisiwe Faith Ndlovu told Chronicle.
"She erased her name and physical address from the child's health cards so that she couldn't be traced. What we know is that she is from Inyathi. We've engaged the social welfare offices in both Bulawayo and Inyathi but nothing concrete has come out," Ndlovu said.
According to hospital records the woman disappeared on the 4 of February.
Ndlovu says if the children stay in the hospital for too long they risk contracting infections.
