The sexual behaviour of youths in tertiary institutions has been described as a major cause of concern in the fight against the HIV and AIDS.
This came out during the belated Mashonaland Central Province World AIDS Day commemorations held at Abare Primary School in Chiweshe.
Bindura University of Science Education Dean of Science, Professor Wilson Parawira called for a regular review of the compulsory HIV and AIDS education course offered at all tertiary institutions so that it meets the challenges of today.
"At Bindura University of Science Education and other tertiary institutions, all first year students regardless of programme they are enrolled in, are required to study and pass the HIV and AIDS education compulsory course, but there is need to regularly review the course to empower the students so that they become relevant," said Professor Parawira.
In his keynote address, the Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Province, Advocate Martin Dinha underscored the need to strengthen HIV and AIDS programmes in higher and tertiary institutions.
"The province needs to arrest the menace of promiscuity that has taken a toll on our youths, especially those at tertiary institutions," he said.
Mashonaland Central Province has 115 000 cases of HIV and AIDS, 73 000 of these are on HIV treatment.
