NAC urges Leaders to promote HIV reduction

The National AIDS Council (NAC) says the goal to eliminate any new HIV infections can be won if leaders at all levels respond to the epidemic through community mobilisation for social and behavioural change programmes.
Leaders at all levels have been called on to ensure that they promote and organise programmes that encourage the reduction of HIV prevalence, especially in their different communities.
In an interview, the NAC Public Relations Officer, Mr. Orirando Manwere said the challenge is not aimed at political leaders alone but various leaders across the social divide.
"This year's commemorations are targeting at ensuring that leaders across all sectors should ensure that new infections, stigma and discrimination as well as AIDS- related deaths are reduced," said Mr. Manwere.
World AIDS Day this year is being commemorated under the theme "Getting to Zero."
Backed by the United Nations, the "Getting to Zero" campaign runs until 2015 and builds on last year's successful World AIDS Day "Light for Rights" initiative encompassing a range of vital issues.
This year's commemorations will be held in Mutare.
