The UN's human rights chief is meanwhile pressing Syrian officials to let in observers to monitor the situation in the country.
Speaking on Friday, UN. High Commissioner, Navi Pillay retierated her concerns that the conflict could erupt into civil war. Pillay says that more than 4,000 people on all sides have died in the nine-month conflict, and confirmed government estimates of 1,000 security forces personnel killed in clashes.
Meanwhile, Turkey, the Arab League and the European Union have imposed sanctions on Syria. President Assad is under growing international pressure to curb the bloodshed.
Navi Pillay said "I would say that whatever it is we would be better placed if we could gain access into the country to assess the situation ourselves and this is why I do believe that having many trained observers in the country will give us a proper understanding even of his own assertion."
